Happy National Catfish Day!
Some information from the World Wide Wikipedia:
“Catfishes are a diverse group of ray-finned fish. Named for their prominent barbels, which resemble a cat’s whiskers. In the United States, catfish species may be known by a variety of slang names, such as “mud cat”, “polliwogs”, or “chuckleheads”. These nicknames are not standardized, so one area may call a bullhead catfish by the nickname “chucklehead”, while in another state or region, that nickname refers to the blue catfish.
Most catfish are bottom feeders. In general, they are negatively buoyant, which means that they will usually sink rather than float due to a reduced gas bladder and a heavy, bony head. Catfish have a variety of body shapes, though most have a cylindrical body with a flattened ventrum to allow for benthic feeding.”
In case you don’t have cable, Catfish are also people who disguise themselves as other people on online. I think the best TV show would be if you joined both types of catfish, so if you took people who lied about who they were on online dating websites and then sent them noodlin’ with other catfish for catfish. Mark my words, hilarity would ensue!
*In case you don’t know what noodlin’ is, basically it’s when you get in a muddy river, fully clothed, with a guy name Billy Bob who has less teeth than fingers, the you stick various parts of your body into murky holes in hopes that a catfish will BITE YOU and you can pull it up. LET ME BE CLEAR- YOU ARE USING YOUR BODY AS CATFISH BAIT! Anyone with an ounce of common sense would not try this. It seems unpredictable, scary, dangerous, and a little crazy. I am going to confess, I kind of want to try it. I have ever since watching Hillbilly Handfishing, a short lived Animal Planet show about noodlin’.
You can read more about catfish noodlin’ by my friends at How Stuff Works. I say friends, cuz I listen to their podcasts and they are sometimes the most adult interaction I get in a day.
